Yearly, Ludo plays “A Very Ludo Christmas” in their hometown of St. Louis. This show always promises to be a wonderland of large decorations, costumed characters, and craziness. Up until this last year, it was always something we heard about, but never were able to see. But, this time, Ludo brought the show to Chicago too, which was wonderful, because Chicago loves them. As you can tell from the photos, there was no holding back: a candy cane arch surrounded the stage, presents/Christmas tress/angels/garland adorned the stage, confetti was flying, and even Santa came out to say hi. Since these are photos, you can’t see that Christmas carols were sung, but trust me, they were.

Definitely the Christmas party of the year.

The thing about Ludo is that they always try to top themselves, and that they are great at not taking life too seriously. This tour was named Space Dracula’s Basketball Expo, and as you can tell, the band (and audience) dressed up to celebrate the theme. I give guitarist Tim Ferrell huge props for wearing his astronaut suit the whole time, because it was super hot in Bottom Lounge.

Those Ludo boys are dedicated.

Ludo is one of my favorites. Through the past eight years I’ve seen them go through line-up changes, several CDs, and countless concerts, and I’m never disappointed. Through it all, they always manage to keep their show fresh and entertaining.

For this show, their big surprise was asking their fans to have a seat on the floor and to be very quiet. They then headed out to the center of the venue and performed “Love Me Dead” a capella. It was a pretty amazing moment.

Ludo @ The Metro

Oh, Ludo. We’ve been to countless shows over the eight or nine years that we’ve been fans, and they never get old. How much do we love them? Last year, we couldn’t go to their Chicago show for their “Broken Bride” tour (which is one of my top 5 albums, ever I might add) because I was shooting a wedding, so the next day, we drove hours to see their show in Columbia, MO because we just couldn’t bear to miss it. Luckily, this time, while they’re out on tour for their new album Prepare the Preparations, we got to see them here. But, if we had to, we still would have driven several hours to see them. Because they’re worth it.

Ludo @ The Blue Note

I was able to shoot Ludo’s whole set, which translated into almost 15 gigs of pictures… so for now, here’s just a small preview until I can sort through all the pictures. (more…)
