As Tall As Lions @ House of Blues

This was the first time I saw/heard As Tall As Lions, and I was impressed. I was very skeptical when I saw all the gear and aix members onstage, because, in my experience, large bands with a lot of instruments usually translates into a racket or just a cluttered stage where half the members stand there and play the same notes (and thus don’t add anything to the music). However, As Tall As Lions did a great job balancing everything, and every member brought something to the show.

The show is upbeat, fun, and while they play music that is approachable and likable to the masses, they still have that indie band feel. As Tall As Lions was probably my favorite find from Twisted.

Shooting Notes

Three songs, no flash for all sets at Twisted, so my main challenge was getting enough clear shots of each member in that short amount of time. If they were playing on a stage any smaller than that at HOB, this could have been a major issue. It also helped that their songs were closer to 4-5 minutes each, rather than the radio friendly 2-3 minute songs that many bands have.

The light was actually fantastic, so sticking to zoom lenses at the f/2.8 aperture (the 16-35mm & 70-200mm, my preferred HOB lenses) was no problem. The band, while energetic was not terribly fast moving, so a shutter speed of 1/125-1/200 was perfect.
