I got an email from Jason Tang, a fellow concert photographer, a few days before this show, introducing MER, and inquiring about my availability. From there, I was in contact with MER himself, and through emails back and forth, I discovered that he and I shared similar musical tastes – he has played with one of my favorite singer/songwriters (Garen from Kill The Alarm), and also attended a few of the recent concerts that Butch Walker played here. Thus, I had high expectations for his show…. and I wasn’t disappointed.
MER has a great, powerful voice, and an engaging stage presence. I always marvel at those that are able to get onstage, by themselves, and keep the attention of the crowd. Check him out HERE.
Shooting Notes
LaSalle Power Co., despite having a small stage, has some of the brightest lights in the area. Lots of color and a wonderfully balanced amount of fog usually give pictures from there a great atmosphere. As the changing light colors affected my exposures, I was constantly changing settings, however, I did stick to mainly the 70-200mm f/2.8 and the 16-35mm f/2.8. Between being able to move around the whole venue to shoot, plus the wide range of focal lengths, I was able to vary the composition of photos a bit – something I always struggle with when there is only one person onstage.
