Ha Ha Tonka has definite talent, Ozark charm, and their shows are always nothing short of fun. Their songs are original, and their live show is completely animated, and different from anything else you’ll see.
Shooting Notes
The House is a coffeehouse with a small stage. It’s quaint, it’s cute, but it’s not lit like a venue. They have a few lights and some Christmas lights….that’s it.
That said, this is probably one of the best lit shows that I have ever shot there. There was some front light, and it actually hit most of the members of Ha Ha Tonka at some point during their set (normally light, if available, is only on the singer). I used mainly primes for this set because I did want to let as much light in as possible – I shot pretty much the entire set with my 35mm and 135mm, with apertures between f/1.4-f/2.2. I managed to keep my ISO between 1600-2500 and my shutter speeds at a comfortable level for me – 1/125 to 1/160.
Venue aside, Ha Ha Tonka is a blast to shoot. They are all very animated and passionate, which comes across in photos. If you’re shooting them, you’ll want to keep an eye out for their a capella song, “Hangman,” where they all gather around two mics, and watch out for Brett on stage right while he plays the piano.
