As I’ve blogged before, The Frantic is a super fun punk-esque band out of Chicago. I had contacted them about shooting their show at House of Blues on June 19th, but then they countered with an offer to shoot some backstage stuff as well. I jumped at the chance. Not only does House of Blues have fantastic color in their band rooms, but The Frantic and their entourage are awesome.
Lots of people always ask what it’s like backstage – really, it’s just guys hanging out and being guys. Oh, except when they have their hair done.
Shooting Notes
This was an unusual shoot for me. I rarely bring out the flashes, unless I’m doing a portrait in a controlled environment, or have no other choice. This fell into the later category. The room was just too dark to produce the shots I wanted, so I set a flash up at 1/16 power on the fridge, bouncing off the wall (which was red, not an optimal bouncing surface, but it was the best I could do). I had a second flash attached to one of the cameras, and used it as my main light, mostly set to ETTL. Both were triggered by RadioPopper PXs.
Other than that, I had a ton of fun. I love shooting candid photography, and The Frantic guys were totally comfortable with me being in there shooting away. A few times they even made faces at me (Brett), or in the case of Kyle, flipped me off, good-naturedly, of course.
I stuck mainly to the 24-70mm and 16-35mm, since the room was small.

It’s different than usual concert shots. It’s interesting since it’s really intimate and shows another face of the band. Love it.
