Another band on the Cancel Out Cancer bill was House of Heroes, who recently released a full-length album, The End Is Not The End.
To me, compared to the other acts that played that night (including Treaty of Paris, Quietdrive, and Company of Thieves), House of Heroes was slightly lackluster. There was nothing bad about them, per se… but there was nothing that made them particularly memorable. Generic, radio-friendly pop-rock seems a fitting description.
However, their Myspace displays over 30,000 friends as well as regular comments, so they appear to be a popular band in the Midwest scene. As I hope to shoot the Uncle Fester Tour (with Relient K, Ludo, and House of Heroes) next week, perhaps I will have to give House of Heroes a second chance.
Shooting notes
The Metro is always a toss up regarding lights. The quality of lighting changes from set to set, and from show to show. For House of Heroes, the lights weren’t especially dark, as much as very colored. Mixes of red, blue, and yellow all shined on the performers with little backlight. The mix of colors produced a chameleon-like look to the photos, so in post, I made the decision to make this primarily a black and white set.
The set was shot with my 16-35mm f/2.8 on my 5D, and the 24-70mm f/2.8 on my Mark II. As I said, the set wasn’t too dim, so I was able to stay on 1600ISO, with shutter speeds between 1/100-1/125, and wide open lenses.
